Can you ask Jesus for something in His name?

Nor do I have any problem in petitioning Jesus or Father. Does ANYONE here have a problem with it?

The question at hand which I have been discussing is whether or not it makes sense to petition X in the name of X (where “X” is any entity whatever, and “in the name of X” is used in the sense of representing X).

I don’t think it is a problem.

But I am far from being concived of the trinity for it only appears in the Gospel of John.

But it is enirely true that without the trinity, God cannot love and remain independent.

That was my point Paidion. I should have been more clear for you. There is no problem petitioning X in the name of X if we interpret the ‘in the name of’ as has Cindy, which is different to your analogy of the English policeman. Only then do we have a problem.

Excellent point, Pilgrim. Cindy did capture the meaning very well; as you did: “in the name of **Je**sus”. Very funny!

I had read what Cindy said, Pilgrim, but it didn’t seem to me that this was a usual use of the term “in the name of”.

I searched some online dictionaries hoping to find the various ways in which the phrase is used. In each case, my understanding was one of the definitions. But there were others also. If Cindy’s definition is there, I don’t seem to see it. Please check the following dictionaries:

But, I was thinking, the original question was about the additional word; that is the thought
of “asking Me” … asking ME, in my name.

Again, our asking “in the name of Jesus,” was not the question,
but that of Jesus apparently saying …“ask Me, in my name” …

If we are to ask Jesus (in the name of Jesus), doesn’t that sort of elevate Jesus …

I suppose we can pray to Jesus, I dont happen to hold with that … you’d have to show me some scriptural support for this? …
but like Paidion said in his example, “asking the King in the name of the King” doesn’t seem to
make much sense; however, if in this verse, God, Himself, is speaking with the
mouth of Jesus, wouldn’t that be something like God in the form of Jesus, saying
ask ME in the name of the guy you know AS Jesus.
