I was taught that this is called “proof-texting”, not a highly respected way to interpret the Bible. What do you guys think?
It’s a wide sweeping sample, painting a big picture. I’m particularly amazed at how many passages are in the OT! So whilst not a proof as such, I think it’s encouraging to see that there are passages that speak of God’s grace to all, not just an elite few.
I agree, roofus–but it’s kinda fun anyway. I wouldn’t promote it as “proof.”
Another example of proof-texting: once in a Bible Study on the “one another’s” (how Christians are supposed to treat each other–in case anyone’s not familiar with that jargon!) the leader of the study gave everyone a reference to look up and read aloud to the group.
One of the refs was:
Job 41:17 They are joined one to another; They clasp each other and cannot be separated.
And I happened to be familiar with that passage and knew it was talking about the scales of Leviathan. We didn’t discuss the contexts of any of the passages–just made a list of the qualities. I suspect the leader of the study just looked up the words “one another” and made the list without really looking at the verses. Maybe it does have some relevance to Christian unity… I don’t know.
I don’t see how this is proof-texting, though. I figure proof-texting is generally taking verses that ideas and/or contexts in them and trying to join them together to prove a doctrine. This video, instead, is referring to sweeping themes of scripture, a practice which generally demolishes proof-texting.
Proof-texting is pretty much based on the idea that individual verses can stand on their own without context since they are the perfect and complete word of God. This video allows for the fuller context these verses are found in, though.
I was thinking of proof-texting as any using of single verses without specific reference to their contexts–right or wrong, but maybe that’s not a correct definition.
If I use a proof-text in the course of a discussion, I expect people to refer to the entire context where the verse is found, not just the one verse I give, and judge for themselves if my proof text is relevant.
So far as sweeping themes of scripture, doesn’t it depend on the spirit with which you look at it? You could compile a list of verses throughout Scripture that emphasises God’s wrath, or coming judgment, etc. Of course, my own perception is that reconciliation is THE overarching theme of scripture–so I can enjoy and delight in this video, not because it proves anything to me, but because it is paints a picture of what I already believe to be the grand and amazing truth of scripture.
This is a really good point and there are many that have done this, chosen to emphasize wrath, etc. . Jonathan Edwards comes to mind.
