Church of Christ, Scientist

Just wondering what everyone here thinks of the Christian Science church? I’ve looked into it a lot and have almost attended a service, but I’m having a hardtime with the belief that Western Medicine doesn’t mix with their brand of healing and you have to do either one or the other.

Does anyone on here have any experience with this church, if so can you elaborate a bit? Thank you.

Do not attend, but ultimately it is your own choice. Why you would want to be apart of this organization I have no idea. I hope this helps your decision. Below are some of the unbiblical beliefs they teach:

• Baptism - Baptism is the spiritual purification of daily life, not a sacrament.

• The Bible - The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, are the two key texts of the faith.

• Communion – No visible elements are necessary to celebrate The Eucharist. Believers practice silent, spiritual communion with God.

• Equality – Christian Science believes women are equal to men. No discrimination is made among races.

• God – The unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is Life, Truth, and Love. Jesus, the Messiah, is divine, not a deity.

• Golden Rule – Believers strive to do unto others as they would have others do unto them. They work to be merciful, just, and pure.

• Heaven and Hell – Heaven and hell exist not as places or as parts of the afterlife but as states of mind. Mary Baker Eddy taught that sinners make their own hell by doing evil, and saints make their own heaven by doing right.

• Homosexuality – Christian Science promotes sex within marriage. However, the denomination also avoids judging others, affirming the spiritual identity each person receives from God.

• Salvation - Man is saved through Christ, the promised Messiah. By his life and works, Jesus shows the way to man’s unity with God. Christian Scientists affirm the virgin birth, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ as evidence of divine love.

Christian Science Practices

• Spiritual Healing – Christian Science sets itself apart from other denominations by its emphasis on spiritual healing. Physical illness and sin are states of mind, correctable through properly applied prayer. While believers routinely refused medical care in the past, recently relaxed guidelines allow them to choose between prayer and conventional medical treatment. Christian Scientists turn first to the church’s practitioners, trained people who pray for members, often from a great distance. Believers hold that, as with the healings of Jesus, distance makes no difference. In Christian Science, the object of prayer is spiritual understanding.

• Priesthood of Believers – The church has no ordained ministers.

• Services – Readers lead Sunday services, reading aloud from the Bible and from Science and Health. Lesson sermons, prepared by the Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts, give insight into prayer and spiritual principles.

I would have to agree with Revival. I personally would keep away from it.

Here is some more info on it…

Hallelujah, Caroleem agrees with me!

 :sunglasses:

Revival,

That’s mostly a solid list of unbiblical teachings. There are two that made your list, though, that I hope you didn’t actually mean to put in there:

Equality – Christian Science believes women are equal to men. No discrimination is made among races.

Golden Rule – Believers strive to do unto others as they would have others do unto them. They work to be merciful, just, and pure.

Maybe you just overlooked them? After all, even those that would argue that men and women are commanded to serve in different roles would still, in principle, affirm their equality, and the Bible would stand with them (and hopefully us!) in disavowing racism and embracing mercy, justice, and purity.

Snitz, I did not make this list personally. It is the beliefs of the christian science organization.

Revival - Snitz didn’t ask you about that - he asked whether you believe those 2 points are unbiblical based on what you said below.

Any denomination/organization that teaches that you shouldn’t go to the doctor is not worth the time of day. And Mary Baker Eddy declared that the crucifixion doesn’t matter because sin doesn’t literally exist, basically.

What attracts you to it so much?

the key word in my statement is the word** SOME** not All their beliefs. I did not get technical and point out the few that were biblical ( which are obvious). Thanks for pointing that out, Jeff and Snitz.

It doesn’t really matter if their beliefs (their creedal statements) are the same as your typical protestant church; if they deny you access to medical care then they are not to be attended.

Honestly so far as their creedal statements I would be inclined to agree with a few of them, or at least be capable of finding valid interpretable premises in the thought behind the statement. But to deny access to Medicine is an issue that one should not get into, no matter the church - whether Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, Catholic, or otherwise.

Pro 18:9 He who is loose and slack in his work is brother to him who is a destroyer and [1] he who does not use his endeavors to heal himself is brother to him who commits suicide. -Amplified

from the;

Pro 18:9 A man who helps not himself by his labour is brother of him that ruins himself. -The Septuagint, Greek LXX (Brenton’s Translation)

I suppose their universalist beliefs on hell are unlike 99.9% of other churches. They’ve actually never had an official policy denying anyone medical care, they pretty much say it’s up to everyone to make that decision, it’s not a cult that will kick you out if you don’t believe or do everything they say.

I found an interesting article on their website regarding hell: christianscience.com/prayer-and- … ct-of-hell
