ECT is not the face of Christianity

Here we have an attempt to distance oneself from an obviously odious doctrine. Of course we Universalists saw this need for distance long ago!

Keep ECT hell, and the God who ordered it, but claim it’s “not the face of Christianity”. Not a coherent move actually, but at least it’s being attempted!!

Could it be that what we may have here folks is an apparent softening of Revival’s heart??? :exclamation:  :exclamation:
That’d be cause for rejoicing!

Sadly, ECT is traditionally accepted as a vital part of Christianity, and thus part of the “face of Christianity”. In fact, in most churches, belief in ECT is a point in their Statement of Faith. In other words, one cannot be an accepted member of those churches unless one believes in ECT. Christianity is thus often seen by non-Christians as a religion based on anger, hate, and unreasonable vengeance, instead of on the God who is revealed most perfectly in Jesus, the God of grace, mercy, love, and forgiveness - unfailing love.

Yup I think you are correct.

Try picking random evangelical church websites and look at their statement of faith. The huge majority of them follow exactly the same formula. First is a statement on scriptural infallibility and last is a statement of eternal damnation and torment.

If it was a house the damnation statement would be the foundation with everything else stacked up on it.

The first statement is used to cover the house and keep it all dry so the foundation doesn’t crumble.

I actually believe that for many (if not most) evangelicals, ECT is the most sacred tenant of their faith - and therefore the most prominent feature on their “face of Christianity”.

I agree. If one questions Hell then they ask such crazy irrational things as, "Well If there is no Hell then:

  1. Why follow Jesus?
  2. Why evangelize?
  3. Why give one’s life for missions?
  4. Why live right and not sin?
  5. Why not just keep on sinning?
    etc. etc. etc.

It’s as if without Hell there is no Christianity. So yes, for most Christians, ECT is Christianity’s “face”. It really doesn’t matter how much one loves God and loves people, if one does not believe in Hell then one cannot be an accepted member of the fellowship. Sad, very sad.

I agree with you davidbo and Sherman. And i would guess that is what many people think of when one mentions they’re a Christian. They assume you believe in ECT and that everyone who is not a Christian will be spending their eternity in these torments. No wonder so many people want nothing to do with Christianity and mock those that believe this way. And it’s no wonder so many become atheists. :frowning:

This definitely seems true, and troubles me greatly. It’s like they can’t find another reason to follow Jesus…

Interesting to see some christians thinking that the cross somehow does away with them having to face any consequences of their past sins (alluded to in a post above  ) - the sin may be forgiven (in that it’s stain doesn’t adhere and it is never brought up again) but the consequences remain.
