Euprofanity

We are all familar with euphemisms, words or phrases that make their references “nicer.”
For example a garbage dump is called a “sanitary land fill,” or “He died” is replaced with “He passed away.”

This kind of replacement been done also with profane language. If one is inclined to use the word “God” profanely, he can substitute “Gosh” and thereby be inoffensive, or at least less offensive. Similarly “Jesus!” is replaced with “Jeez!”

The following website lists “140 Alternative Ways to Cuss Politely”:

My question is this:

For a Christian, is it all right, while avoiding the use of profanity, to use such alternative words and expressions?
Many Christians do it, but intuitively I feel that we shouldn’t.

What do you think?

You’ve opened up a can of worms!!

Actually, it is one of our biggest area’s of submission… to control our tounge

I prefer funny curse terms that do not mirror/mimic actual curses:

“Oh, fish-feathers!”

I’m not so sure that that isn’t an expression for a profane term.

I had intended to ask you what a “tounge” is. But I decided first, to look it up in a dictionary.

I learned something new today. According to Wiktionary, it is an obsolete spelling of “tongue.” (though it also said it was a misspelling of “tongue”).

My question to you is… How important is this? To be able to control our tounge, (or tongue) which we know is called a two edged sword?

In your day to day life, how important is this to you?

We probably shouldn’t. I’m guilty of screaming Jesus Christ in a loud volume when I stub my toe or someone cuts me off on the road. It’s not good for me to be quick to anger and scream out, but if I’m going to scream anything it might as well be his name than Gee Wiz when God knows that Gee Wiz is a corny replacement for Jesus.

After some attempts, I cannot for the life of me imagine what the profane term underlying “fish-feathers” would be.

Think of a profane word beginning with “f” or better yet two consecutive words beginning with “f”.

Not using this against you perse, but what immediately came to mind was Titus 1:15 “To the pure, all things are pure…” I am sure people will accuse of taking out of context (seems to be the trump card everyone uses these days!) but the reality is, as Jesus said, evil comes from within. The object itself isn’t the sin, but how one views it. I believe the best example of this regard would be nudity. Ponder this for a moment. Didn’t God say all he created was good? So, are naked bodies evil or are they beautiful? Well, I would argue they are beautiful. But stay with me here. Does this then mean that pornography is good? By no means, as pornography has a very dark and sinister puppet master behind it. Trying to exploit what God created as beautiful to be degraded and stolen for a quick high. It is the mindset that the naked body is evil to view is what causes many to be in bondage to it. God created beautiful creatures and there is a beauty in the human body that can be appreciated just like a flower can be. But, as with all objects, it can be abused and unfortunately we sinners are prone to abusing his objects. But, to the pure, a naked body is nothing to be ashamed of… That said, with everything, I am sure someone can make some justification for viewing pornography from what I have said, but I take no responsibility for that as people will always try and find a way to twist things to justify sinful behavior until they are ready to repent. All I am saying is that the object is not where the evil starts or even ends. Lust will find any object to satisfied it’s desires. Heck, seeing a bare ankle in some cultures has the same identical affect in men as a playboy. That alone should really cause people to ponder this issue further… Is the object the problem or the objector? all this to say that "fish feathers’ is absolutely innocent in my view. But if you wanted too, you could probably find reasons it is evil for the reason I cited above.

While I can think of a profane word that begins with the letter “f”, I’m not seeing the similarity. All kinds of words begin with the letter “f”, including “faithful” and “friends”. Is saying, “Oh, fish-feathers!” any worse/different than saying “faithful friends”?

When Jesus cried out “my God, my God, why has thou forsaken me!?” Was Jesus cussing?

I went to catholic school from second grade through the eighth. In our eighth grade I had a very dear friend named Ernie. Ernie went on to be a successful dentist and I went on to be… Oh well  But any way, one day Ernie and I got into a discussion about if F*** you was worse than G** Damn. It went on for a while and as I look back on it, it was quite a conversation. We both should have said “we don’t need to use those terms…”

Culture can be brutal.

I’ve had discussions with others about the use of swear words. The thing I find strange is that when I am very mad, fish feathers just doesn’t seem to cut the mustard. A good swear word and I’m good to go. Why is that?
