Franklin Graham: Rob Bell is a false teacher and a heretic

"]“the man is a false teacher…a heretic” - Franklin Graham on Rob Bell around 2:50 ow.ly/4LFxU (video)It’s ironic that the Samaritan’s Purse’s President is being so uncharitable! :frowning:

He must think ALL Christian universalists are false teachers and heretics then, right?

That is SUCH an ignorant statement.

Tom

It is, but let’s remember that for most of us, we too once thought in this way. It is almost impossible for people to “break out” of a certain way of thinking. Imagine how difficult it would be for someone like John Piper or John Macarthur, who have essentially built their careers on a particular view of Scripture, to even begin to admit that that “way of thinking” might be wrong. I am truly thankful every day for the gift God gave me of “seeing” the truth of UR. I am so utterly convinced of it now, but it wasn’t that long ago that I thought AllanS was a heretic.

Those in full-time ministry will be the followers, not the leaders on this issue. They have too much vested in maintaining orthodoxy and too much to risk to even allow a hint of hetro-doxy.

Look how a great pastor like Peter Hiett (now at Sanctuary Downtown in Denver) was treated when he dared to stick his head out on this issue. Now Rob Bell on a bigger scale is getting the same treatment.

He sounded like he hadn’t read the book and may have had little idea about its contents.

Well, give him 50 years and he might come around. His dad nearly did.

Alex,
Do you believe that there are heretics?

His response had no testimony in disagreement with Rob Bell, or anywhere to bring charge against him as being a false teacher.

Deuteronomy 14:15 One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

His dad sounded much more inclusivist than he did in that interview. Maybe he’s trying to undo misconceptions? I doubt he’d disagree with his dad that much.

Yes, but a far as I know, Rob Bell isn’t one. For example, as far as I can tell, Joseph Smith was a heretic (I don’t mean everything he said/wrote was false, but enough seems clearly unbiblical & untrue, that I wouldn’t have been able to have him as my minister/teacher). Obviously, ultimately it’s between him & God, but each of us has to test things as best as we are able.

The Pharisees knew that Jesus was from God and decided to kill him because they thought that Jesus would bring down the Romans onto Israel and they would lose their place. We seem to hold onto our “Own Stuff” rather than believe in who God really is. He is too good to be true. But it is true, He really really does love all of us.

Welcome Dave! Great first post :sunglasses:

I like that last bit and totally agree but I’m not sure about the historical part though that’s possible. They did say he was from God but how much that resonated with them all or how certain they were etc, certainly seemed to vary, and them putting him to death in absolute certainty seems improbable. Of course there were different parties of Pharisees. I personally doubt it had to do with the empire so much as that he claimed to be God yet contradicted almost everything they thought about God. They were actually probably hoping for the Messiah to save them from the Romans like everyone else (the Sadducees, I think, had the special positions). But I’m open to being very wrong about this. I don’t have much history to go on besides the gospels.

If you’d like to make a new thread about this so as not to derail this one, feel free! And, welcome!
