The passage is clear that it is a mistake to consider God punishing Christ as if He had done something wrong. Christ was innocent. Rather God inflicted wrath on Christ (by permitting evil men and Satan to have their way with Him) for our transgressions. Our sin and sickness was laid on Christ. The passage is telling us that Christ suffered for our sins not His.
When the Father poured out His wrath on Christ by permitting evil men and Satan to have their way with Him God was pleased. God was pleased with the Son in His obedience to Him and the love that He showed towards sinners. He didn’t delight in the evil and suffering in and of itself but in what Christ was doing in His suffering and death. By showing His love for the Father and sinners Christ was destroying evil and suffering. There is no sin too great that the Father and Son cannot bring from it everlasting righteousness and joy. In this The Father was pleased. Christ was infinitely loved by the Father in His sufferings. Therefore, there is no schism in the Trinity. As we enter into a mystical union with Christ His death becomes our death. Sin is imputed to Him and righteousness is imputed to us. We are one with Christ. We die to the old self and are risen to new life. Christ is our mercy seat where our sin is expiated and God’s wrath is propitiated. What Satan and evil men meant for evil God meant for good.
