John Dickson posts on FaceBook about Hell!

Even more excited as his comments in thread suggest he’s finally been shown the email (below) I sent (a few months ago) to the Centre for Public Christianity!

Cool!

Hi,
I have the book of Edward William Fudge, The Fire That Consumes. Very interesting.
Who watched the movie Hell and Mr Fudge?
Best regards,
Jani

I was able to catch the movie last summer at a special debut screening for scholars in Nashville, TN.

It’s okay as a drama, but nothing that any educated Christian universalist (or I would say even an ECT proponent) need worry about. Very basic introduction to his thought at best, and of course to his original thoughts not to his mature studies.

The most recent edition of The Fire That Consumes would doubtless be better. (I haven’t received my copy yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s still on preorder.)

I saw the movie with Jason and enjoyed it. I look forward to getting the dvd when it comes out.

Really? I don’t recall you being there (although I was looking for you). Did you go to the three-way debate between Jerry Walls, Tom Talbott and Edward Fudge afterward? I’m sorry that I don’t recall meeting you there.

We did definitely see the Hellbound? movie in Nashville later last year, however.

I’m all for people looking into this issue more

Shedding light on the reality of hell can only be a good thing. :sunglasses:

I wonder if he’d be willing to go for an exchange discussion…

Indeed.

The FaceBook thread keeping me busy!

One of the people asking was me

Trying not to irritate him… hopefully he understands my motivation

Oops, that was HellBound where I met you. I didn’t see the one on Mr. Fudge. Do you think it’s worth picking up the dvd?

Well, I ordered the DVD, but mostly for the extras – of which there will not be as many as I was hoping, but which will be released later according to Kevin. In some way. Eh.

I was not as sanguine about the movie itself in my comments on it back at that time. It’s a fairly basic overview, and its focus on the cultural shape of hell tends to distract (IMO) from the doctrinal issues being tossed back and forth. This does help it be accessible, but also leaves the film open to charges of oversimplification and low-fruit picking (if not outright rhetorical straw-manning). Robin Parry’s work toward the end was the high point and makes a fitting climax IMO, but I wish I could have seen more of that kind of thing from all sides.

To be fair, I’m sure I’m asking for much more than would have been feasible for marketing the DVD to a profitable audience.

So in short: I own it, but I’m not sure I feel comfortable showing it to my family or friends as an example of what I mean by my beliefs. The meandering is interesting in itself, but it doesn’t seem helpful for that purpose, and I worry they’ll feel like they’re being made fun of by such methods.

Personally I would like to topically map the pros and cons back and forth from the total interview materials and edit those into a presentation more focused on the theological issues rather than the flavors (so to speak). There’s some meat in the DVD, but it’s more like a Big Mac or Whopper with all the trimmings rather than a good sirloin cut steak dinner. Nothing against the former, but I and the people whose opinion of me I care the most about would prefer the latter.

I agree with you, Jason. And like you, I won’t be showing it around for your reasons, and also because other issues were included in the DVD besides hell (notably Israel). It’s enough to ask your family/friends to re-think hell. Asking them to ALSO rethink another sensitive topic (without any evidence given) is just too much in one mouthful. It may be too much for ME in one mouthful, but that’s another topic all together.

I had totally forgotten the whole Israel angle!

As in… I’m racking my brains and I still don’t recall it.

I think it was Frank S saying something along the lines of “Evangelicals want everything B&W but in reality things are more complicated than that. For example the Israel/Palestinian conflict. [Followed by 10(?) seconds of footage]” As far as I know, that’s the way most Australians understand the situation, although my American uncle & aunt are passionately pro-Israel so realise that would probably offend them

I dunno – I wasn’t counting seconds or anything. I was just watching and thinking, OH MAN :frowning: I can’t show this to my husband (who believes just because I do, but never mind); I can’t show this to my friends . . . I mean, I overlook it, but a lot of people I know would just shut down at that point. So anyway. It wasn’t bad and the whole Israel thing is probably one of those things that’s just accepted as an uncontested truth among his gang/crew/tribe. It isn’t that way here at all though. People who might be persuaded to listen . . . just barely . . . would be done when they heard that. "Oh, it’s THOSE people. Okay. Yeah, thanks for sharing; I didn’t find it persuasive and no, I don’t want to hear any more. And I’ll be praying for you – we’re really worried . . . "

:sunglasses:

They will be released online :nerd:

Sweet! – let me know when! :sunglasses:

You know me, always looking for opportunities to bring people good news
