Questions about Origen

Does anyone know where I could read some primary material from Origen? I know we have some historians here, so I am humbly calling on their expertise!

Hi Chris -

Yes, for starters, you can find some of Origen’s extant writings online in a good nineteenth century English translation (edited by the illustrious Philip Schaff) here –

ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf04.toc.html

The writings are -

Prologue of Rufinus
De Principis (major work)
Letter to Africanus
Letter to Gregory
Against/Contra Celsus (major work)

All the best

Schaff’s collection of (at the time) recently recovered commentaries can also be found here:

ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf09.html

These includes commentaries on GosJohn chapters 1-10, and GosMatt chapters 1-2, 10-14.

The online Catholic Encyclopedia includes a few others along with some already mentioned:
newadvent.org/fathers/ (scroll down to find in alphabetical author order)

The extra texts aren’t directly from Origen but are the other side of the correspondence with Gregory and Africanus.

The Dialogue with Heraclitus can be found here.

A Homily on Prayer

The Philocalia

Last year a ton of previously lost homilies were rediscovered in the Bavarian National Archives, but (I expect) a lot of study remains before these can be fully assessed as original to Origen.

Wow that’s interesting

Thank you Dick and Jason. Always so helpful. I appreciate you guys’ work and expertise!
