that they may know that I am the Lord

just had a thought.
so many times in the OT, God proscribes judgement on nations “so that they may know that He is the Lord.”
this begs the question, would or even COULD they have known He was the Lord beforehand?

maybe God’s wrath is also part of His saving revelation…
and since God does not change, His wrath would still have this educative and revelatory power.

nothing in the OT is done from spite, it’s done at the right time, and for the right affect. warnings are given to avoid it, but inevitably almost all nations got the full brunt of it. if this showed them in a rather spiteful way that God is the Lord on their way to hell, nothing is gained from this education. but God promises again and again to restore. the dunce cap removed, the pupil returned to his or her seat…chastened, but restored. and back to the lessons.

Yes, I think that you are absolutely right. Moreover, I think that the economic reversals we’re presently suffering are God’s wrath, for our benefit and ultimate restoration. People in cedar paneled houses with abundantly yielding vineyards and prospering herds and etc. tend to forget where all that bounty came from. They (we?) are self-sufficient (or think they are) and have no felt need for God. It is when things get dark that the light of His true word becomes attractive.
