Universalist Anglican Minister: Contradiction?

Pog - I’ve been looking at the nineteenth century debates about the damnatory clauses. The argument from Church tradition that allows for discernment is that in Article 20 it is affirmed that the Church Councils - including the Convocation that produced the Articles by implication - were not free from error. This allows for an ongoing engagement with truth of doctrine by Anglicans. And especially since you are being asked to assent to the Articles - in other words to affirm their sprit - rather than subscribe to them, as used to be the case - in other words abide by the letter of them - and indeed are not compelled to use the Athanasian Creed in worship - there is no real issue here as far as I can see.

Hi Pog,

Fifty six years ago I had “serious thoughts of becoming an Anglican priest” and you are right that it is a long process. I never made it myself - Many are called but few are chosen! So you might think what help can I give. Not much really!

However I would humbly suggest that, during the long process, it should become clear as to whether you can or not sign along the final dotted lines, and that now it could well be too early to be anticipating that moment, interesting and helpful as indeed this thread is. Starting the process is a jump of faith in God’s call to be a priest, and in my case I was greatly helped along to take that jump under the guidance of my local Anglican Bishop and school Chaplain. Having taken the jump, the process was indeed long, and along the way I failed to make the landing. Splash!

With heartfelt wishes and prayers as you find your way

Dear Pog,

Sorry on re-reading yours opening the thread I now see you have to sign up when committing yourself as an ordinand!

Anyway my wishes and prayers for you remain! And it will still be a jump and I wish you a happy landing if God chooses for you to take the jump!

Just to say that after doing a bit of reading around Anglicanism and attending the parish church a little, and a brief chat to the priest, I’m not convinced that the established church is for me (or me for it).

Then again, I have never found a church where I belonged, so what’s new

And I never did get a reply to my questions from the CofE …
