William Temple, Bishop in the Church of England said,
“If you’re concept of God is radically false, the more devoted you are the worse off you will be.”
Hmm . . . too true, I suspect. Inquisition, crusades, etc . . .
Sounds about right to me, Sherman
But, on the other hand, I think the true God can work with people who are a little off here or there when it comes to what they believe and how they perceive things… we all see through a glass darkly, after all.
But there are definitely some destructive and dangerous ideas about God that people can get into their heads. I know this from experience, as I’ve had a number of those kinds of ideas in my head at times throughout my life
I’m thankful though that nowadays my image of God is healthier and more positive, even if, no doubt, I still have much to learn and much room to grow in when it comes to how I see and relate to God.
Blessings to you
Matt
I think the quote from Bishop Templeton especially reflects the difference between the view of God as penalizing wrongdoers and the view of God as correcting them. He who holds the former view tends to look at wrongdoers as inferior and insists that all of them must “pay” for what they did in this life as well as the next. He who holds that God loves all, and desires a complete regeneration of all, will also love his fellow man, and do what he can to help others come to a place where they change or reform or regenerate, and thus live fulfilling lives of service to God and others.
